Music Ministry

“He who sings prays twice” ~ St. Augustine

The St. Brendan’s Music Ministry uses their voices and musical talents to glorify God in song.  Through our cantors, choirs, and musicians, we lead the parish in song, helping the people to engage in full, conscious, and active participation in the Mass.  We are a “parish that sings” and we pray that through the use of our God-given talents and gifts, we may lead others closer to our Lord and dive deeper into our relationship with Christ.

Lend your voice to the Lord!

Below are the different ways that one can be involved in the Music Ministry at St. Brendan’s. We are always looking for new members.

Traditional Choir

The traditional choir is comprised of parishioners from 9th grade through all stages of life. This group is blessed to be able to join their voices to sing God’s glory at the 9:00 Mass September through May and at special liturgies throughout the year. Practices are on Thursday evenings in the church from 7:30-9:00. In preparation for special liturgies or Liturgical Seasons, extra practices may be added. No previous experience is necessary to join this group. All voices are welcome!

Youth Choir

The youth choir is open to all parish children in grades 3-8. The children sing at the 9:00 Mass the second weekend of the month in October, November, February, March and April. They practice from 10:00-11:00 on the first Sunday of each month. This group will also sing at other special liturgies throughout the year. Through song, the children humbly serve the Church and grow in their faith while helping the congregation enter more fully into worship.

Cantors

Cantors are individuals who are called to lead the Church in song at the weekend Masses.  Cantors humbly serve and help to lead the congregation to more actively participate in the Mass. They are required to prepare ahead of time for each Mass and must be comfortable singing either solo or as a duet. Cantors are also responsible for learning and teaching new music.  When needed, a group rehearsal may take place.

Instrumentalists

Those who have been given the gift to competently play an instrument can serve the parish by playing for weekend Masses as well as special liturgies. An instrumentalist must be comfortable playing with the organ or piano and may accompany the traditional choir or the youth choir. Those individuals interested in this role can contact the Director of Music Ministry for consideration.

Children’s Christmas Choir

The Children’s Christmas Choir is open to all children in grade 3 through grade 8. The group practices during Advent on Sunday mornings from 10:00-11:00 and sings for the 5:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass. This choir is a separate commitment from the Parish Youth Choir.

Meet the Director of Music Ministry

At the age of 14 I joined the adult choir at my parish and found my passion in liturgical music.  At the age of 16, knowing that I had taken piano lessons, the music director asked that I make an attempt at playing the organ in the absence of our regular organist who was heading to college.  In the next year, I self-taught the organ and became a regular organist for the parish.  In my 27 years in music ministry, I have played for and sang numerous Masses, weddings and funerals.  I find true joy in leading the music for worship, and I pray that my work will bring Glory to God and draw others into deeper prayer.
